Breathing Room

“What art offers is space – a certain breathing room for the spirit.”
-John Updike

The simple luxury of time – breathing room – time to experiment with some new pieces. I read somewhere that a recession should be thought of as a recess.** I like that idea, timeout for the soul to play and regroup. The gloom and doom in the news everyday is difficult to bear at times. I am working hard on focusing, creating new pieces and watching as things slowly begin to change in the world. I have added a few new areas to my website. An online sale area for studio sales and a new gallery to showcase some of my smaller works. Art is important.

**I found where I read this great thought!!  It was posted on the NAIA forum for artists by Patricia Hecker. Here are her wonderful thoughts: “There are days I feel very depressed about the climate of selling my work. There are other days where I see this as a time of growth and opportunity. If we think of the word recession and think of it more as ‘recess’……it can become for us the ‘break’ from routine it was when we were in grade school. We probably all loved recess in school. We now have a ‘new’ version of the same. Maybe not as fun, but the time to do things differently. An intermission to re-group.”

Thank you Patricia!

These are 6″x 6″ square on panels.

“Studio Sale” work available on ebay.

Trying something new – in the spirit of “Change”. I just listed one of my favorite works from 2006 on ebay for sale. ( It did not sell on ebay but is now listed in my new “Studio Sale” gallery page on my website.) More change!

"Considered Opinion" 16" x 20"

This piece is 16″ x 20″ work on panel, acrylic, mixed media with collage elements. Soft deep wine colors with sage greens.

“Studio Sale” works are pieces that have been in my studio for a time and are looking for a good home. They are far from rejects, only orphaned works that have been in my collection. Space constraints in my studio require me to list them as available for purchase at a nice discount from original pricing.

Change, A New Year, Change

“One should paint small, and then very big. Miniatures and murals. Humans do their best with variety. Most people are bored, and even artists are bored. The answer is change.”

Painting large. I have been focusing my energy on this for what seems like a very long time. Large canvases somehow seemed to call to me. Recently, I was asked to create a 6″ x 6″ work for a show titled “Small Wonders” at my Gallery in Michigan  (The Water Street Gallery), piece of cake I thought… major mind shift! Wow, I am having some fun with this!! There is something absolutely wonderful and precious about small work. (I will post some of the pieces soon…) Change, the catch phrase of the moment seems to be grabbing a hold of me as well – it is so easy to sit in a comfortable place and not take on that challenge of change that is required…let see where this goes. Anyone interested?
